How was your Memorial Day? Mine was fraught with irony.

We attended the cemetery Memorial Day program, which was awesome and well worth our time. Two ironic things happened there:

1. Lola sang with the jazz band, which did a warm-up act. Singing big band tunes for the old timers is always a good idea. They were awesome. The marching band was also there to perform the Armed Forces anthems. When they weren't performing, they stood at something like parade rest along the aisles like the professionals they are. After the performance, and during the program, Lola proceeded to not sit still. At all. And she was whispering (gesticulating wildly) with her friend, which might not have been a problem if she hadn't been sitting on the stage. Finally I broke my rule about texting during church-type meetings and texted her that she should sit still and be quiet so people could enjoy the program. She repented and sat still. A few seconds after this text exchange, one of the band members passed out. So a person who never moved a muscle for most of the program ended up creating a much bigger distraction than my kid.

2. The theme of this year's program was Women of Service and Sacrifice. After talking about women in the military and the awesome contribution they make, they had all the women who had ever served stand to receive a rose. Then they had all the mothers who had supported a husband or son stand to receive a rose. Daughters? Anyone? No mention of them. Oops!!

After the program we came home and worked in our garden for the afternoon. We planted our stuff, even though it is still getting down into the 30s at night. After all, it's practically June. The minute we got the last plant in the ground (and I mean I was literally patting the soil around the pathetic little seedling), it started to hail. Seriously?

And that was our day. I think it will be one to remember. Which may have been at least part of the point.
